Project Biennale

Project BIENNALE : THE INTRODUCTION

Posted in Uncategorized by projectbiennale on June 14, 2009

Project Biennale grew out of conversations, concerns, interests and inquiries developed through discussions, seminars and meetings established across three groups of postgraduate curating students from Chelsea College of Art, the University of Essex, and Sheffield Hallam University. The project began with no conception: there were no plans, no strategies and no aims for any specific outcome. The topic and title developed over five months of meetings and debate. However, through this process we understood that the demanding problem of the purpose and place of curatorial authorship was made exemplary when viewed through the lens of ‘biennale culture’.

————————————————————————

Project BIENNALE is a critical investigation into the peripheral activities that extend and support the experience of the phenomenon that is biennale culture. The review is a staging of a series of encounters that explore and develop the experiential nature of the supplementary events surrounding the contemporary art biennale.

Central to the project is a collaborative publication containing contributions by MA curating students from Chelsea College of Art & Design, University of Essex, and Sheffield Hallam University, plus invited curators from around the UK. The publication is an anthology of writing and visual projects that reflect on current issues surrounding international biennale exhibitions and was launched at the Venice Biennale on 4th June. The event was part of the UK contribution to the world’s premier contemporary arts festival.
